How do I search correctly with Google?

Google is the world’s largest and most popular search engine. Ease of use is one of the main reasons for Google’s success. However, a search engine can only ever be as good as the user who makes the search query. It therefore makes sense to familiarize yourself with the possibilities that Google offers. Below you will find tips and tricks to optimize your search query and thus increase your hit rate. Please note that the tips are also valid for other search engines, such as Yahoo or Bing.

  • Tip 1: Make the right search query Google is a full-text search engine. This means that the terms entered are searched for in the text of the individual pages. Search engines work with a so-called crawler, which searches the pages of the Internet and includes the pages found in an index. It is therefore important to make the search query as precise as possible. For example, you should not enter “I would like to spend a vacation in Italy” in Google, but instead “Italy vacation” or even more precisely “Sicily vacation”.
  • Tip 2: The order of the search terms The order of the search terms is of great importance. The term that is entered first usually appears first in the text of the pages found. However, this does not apply to all search engines!
  • Tip 3: The use of quotation marks If you are looking for a specific phrase, such as “Berghotel Südtirol”, enclose it in quotation marks. This will only display pages that contain this exact phrase.
  • Tip 4: The use of AND and OR Google automatically uses the logical “AND” between the individual search terms. This means that all terms entered will be found on the pages. If you are looking for pages that contain either one or the other term, use the word “OR” (in capital letters) between the terms.
  • Tip 5: The use of wildcards Google also supports the use of wildcards, which are represented by the asterisk (*). This is particularly useful if you are searching for a specific word form or combination.
  • Tip 6: The use of plus and minus signs You can use the plus sign (+) to force certain terms in the search query. You can use the minus sign (-) to exclude certain terms.
  • Tip 7: Using special commands Google also offers a range of special commands that can further refine your search. Some useful commands are: site: – Searches only on a specific website. Example: “site:example.com” filetype: – Searches only for specific file types. Example: “filetype:pdf” related: – Finds similar pages to a specific website. Example: “related:example.com”
